LIVE ALPHA · LEARNING IN PUBLIC

Good
Bank.

A public experiment in moving attention toward work worth noticing.

Rank a shared field of 1,000 nonprofits. We’re building the machinery, language, and safeguards that could eventually help real money follow informed public attention.

01 · Signal

One browser, one current signal per organization.

An up signal raises the shared score by one; a down signal lowers it by one. Press the same choice again to clear it.

02 · Recognize

The top position is recognized daily at noon ET.

Its signals then clear and it moves to the bottom. If nobody is here at exactly noon, settlement is recorded on the first board visit after noon.

03 · Learn

Today’s award is attention—not money.

Good Bank may eventually direct real funding, but only after identity, evidence, nonprofit verification, governance, legal, tax, and payment systems are ready.

Directory provenance and limits. This first 1,000-organization directory was assembled from current Wikidata nonprofit records with an English description, an official website field, and no recorded dissolution date. Purpose lines are brief source-derived summaries. Inclusion is not LifeCo verification, endorsement, partnership, or proof of current tax status. There is intentionally no search in this experiment.

What we need to learn

01

Does a simple score teach us anything useful?

Community attention is only one signal. Evidence quality, urgency, funding gaps, neglected causes, and moral uncertainty cannot responsibly disappear into an unexplained number.

02

Can an open board resist manipulation?

This alpha uses a durable browser identity and a generous rate limit. It does not yet solve coordinated voting, duplicate people, bots, moderation, appeals, or identity.

03

What must exist before money follows?

Independent nonprofit verification, published rules, governance, legal and tax review, payment infrastructure, donor protection, audit trails, and a fair way to resolve disputes.

Connecting small donations to big work

People want to help. Many of us just don’t know where to start, or what organizations to support.

Goodbank will help connect the caring instincts of people around the world with organizations doing good work everywhere.

Using a free membership platform and public ranking pages, Goodbank will channel money into the projects people care about most, using the wisdom of the crowd to guide daily donations.

Project brief

Goodbank is exploring a simple way for people to make small, recurring gifts with more confidence. Rather than ranking charities by popularity, a responsible service would make its criteria public, draw on independent evaluators, distinguish strong evidence from informed judgment, disclose conflicts, and let donors choose among different values and cause areas. Lifeco is not currently collecting or directing gifts through Goodbank.

Working principles

  • Show the reasoning, evidence quality, uncertainty, fees, and conflicts behind every recommendation.
  • Respect donor choice while making impact, room for more funding, and organizational accountability easy to compare.
  • Protect donor privacy and avoid turning charitable giving into a popularity contest or engagement game.

Organizations and resources to learn from

These independent links are starting points for research. They are not endorsements, funding recommendations, or claims of partnership.

  • GiveWell — deep research into cost-effective global health and development opportunities
  • Giving What We Can — guides and research for intentional, effective giving
  • The Life You Can Save — donor education and evidence-informed charity recommendations

Near-term milestones

  1. Publish a draft evaluation rubric and a plain-language conflicts policy.
  2. Prototype a non-transactional directory using public evaluator data and clearly labeled uncertainty.
  3. Interview donors, charity evaluators, nonprofits, and privacy specialists before handling any donations.

Current status

How to help

We welcome charity researchers, nonprofit operators, donor-platform designers, privacy specialists, and people who can test whether the information is genuinely useful to everyday donors. If that is you, contact Lifeco and mention this project.
