Repopulating species on the brink

The rise of humans has pushed countless species off the existential edge. Many more will disappear soon.

Respawn will work against this trend by actively expanding populations of endangered and diminishing animal groups.

We’ll focus on protected areas, and cultivate a body of knowledge around how to best support recovering species and strengthen stressed ecosystems.

Project brief

Respawn is exploring how to support the recovery of threatened species and the ecological relationships they depend on. Reintroduction is a specialized conservation tool, not simply releasing more animals or plants. It requires suitable habitat, genetic and disease planning, animal-welfare safeguards, permits, community support, long-term monitoring, and a clear assessment of ecological risks.

Working principles

  • Follow established conservation-translocation guidance and independent species expertise.
  • Address the original causes of decline and restore habitat before moving organisms.
  • Plan for genetics, disease, welfare, invasive-species risk, local livelihoods, and decades of monitoring.

Near-term milestones

  1. Create a screening rubric aligned with IUCN guidance and local legal requirements.
  2. Identify one species-recovery program where an existing expert organization has a defined, unfunded need.
  3. Support a partner-led research, habitat, or monitoring gap before considering any independent reintroduction.

Current status

Research and relationship-building. Lifeco is not yet operating a field program under this project.
